Kalamandalam Balasubramanian was
born on May 26, 1955. His father is C.V. Rama Warrier.
After the eighth standard he joined Kerala Kalamandalam for 6 years Diploma in Kathakali Vesham under Kalamandalam Raman Kutty Nair and Kalamandalam Gopi. Then he learned with 2 years Scholarship by Human Resources Development Department, Government Of India for advanced studies under Kalamandalam Raman Kutty Nair. Then 1 year special advance training under Kalamandalam Raman Kutty Nair. Since 1979, working as Professor and Head of the Department of Kathakali vesham (Vadakkan Style) in Kerala Kalamandalam. Also has 2 years experience in Guruvayoor Kathakali Club.
His expertise is in 'Pacha' (Bheema, Arjuna, Krishna & Nala), 'Kathi' (Kichaka, Narakasura, Duryodhana & Ravana), and 'Vellathadi' (Hanuman) characters. And his well known Veshams are Nalan, Krishna, Roudra Bheeman, Balabhadran, Parasuraman, Kattalan and Hanuman. Has performed Kathakali all over India including Ahamedabad, Bombay, Madras, Calcutta, etc. and abroad including America, Russia, Japan, Europe, London, England, South America, Australia, Thailand, New zealand, Tehran, Portugal, Germany, Gulf countries, Paris, Italy, Singapore, Canada, Mexico, Newyork, Taiwan and Holland.
Has received many awards like David Bolland Gold Medal of Kerala Kalamandalam in 1974, Nareri Achan Thampuran Smaraka Trophy of Trichur Kathakali Club in 1978, and Krishnan Kutty Smaraka Mudra of Thiruvamadi Devaswom Trichur in 1998. Has performed several times in CPC-Delhi, National Network, Dooradarsan, and BBC. Has performed Kathakali in different documentary films like Mohiniyattam by M.T. Vasudevan Nair, Krishnan Kutty Poduval by P.V.Chandran, Mahabharatha by Milena Salviini (Paris) and many more. And done Kathakali Choreography and dance performance in movies like Vanaprastham (1999) and Desadanam (1997).
